Deepslate Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft deepslate with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, deepslate is a new block that was introduced in the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part I. This block is not made with a crafting table but rather a furnace.

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 1

Let’s explore how to add deepslate to your inventory.

Where to find Deepslate in Creative Mode

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Here is where you can find deepslate in the Creative Inventory menu:

Platform Version(s) Creative Menu Location
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.17 – 1.19.4
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3 – 1.19.4
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

Required Materials to make Deepslate

In Minecraft, these are the materials you can use to craft deepslate:

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 6 1 Cobbled Deepslate

How to craft Deepslate in Survival Mode

1. Open the Furnace Menu

First, open your furnace so that you have the Furnace menu that looks like this:

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 7

2. Add Fuel to the Furnace

Next, you need to add fuel to the bottom fuel box in the furnace.

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 8

In this tutorial, we are going to use coal as our fuel.

TIP: Read our tutorial called How to Add Fuel to a Furnace if you aren’t sure what items can be used as fuel, the length of time each fuel will burn, or how many items each fuel can smelt/cook.

3. Add Items to make Deepslate

Next, place the cobbled deepslate in the top box of the furnace. You should see the flames cooking the cobbled deepslate.

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 9

Once the cobbled deepslate is cooked/smelted in the furnace, the deepslate will appear in the box to the right.

4. Move the Deepslate to Inventory

Now that you have made deepslate in your furnace, you need to move the new item to your inventory.

Congratulations, you have made deepslate in Minecraft!

How to get Deepslate in Survival Mode

You can add deepslate to your inventory in Survival mode by mining deepslate with a pickaxe that is enchanted with Silk Touch. So, let’s get started!

1. Find a Block of Deepslate

First, let’s explore where to find deepslate. You can usually find deepslate in the new cave systems that are deep underground and below a y-coordinate of 0.

This is what a block of deepslate looks like:

2. Hold a Pickaxe with Silk Touch

To mine for deepslate, you need to dig up the deepslate with a pickaxe that has been enchanted with Silk Touch. Select one of these pickaxes in your hotbar:

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 14 How to make a Golden Pickaxe
Deepslate - Wiki Guide 15 How to make a Iron Pickaxe
Deepslate - Wiki Guide 16 How to make a Stone Pickaxe
Deepslate - Wiki Guide 17 How to make a Wooden Pickaxe
Deepslate - Wiki Guide 18 How to make a Netherite Pickaxe

If you try to dig up the deepslate with your hand or other tool (that is not a pickaxe with Silk Touch), the small block of deepslate will not appear. And you will not be able to add the deepslate to your inventory.

In this example, we are going to use an iron pickaxe with Silk Touch to dig up the deepslate.

3. Mine the Deepslate

The game control to mine the deepslate depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the deepslate.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the deepslate.
  • For Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the deepslate.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the deepslate.

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 19

You will need to continue to mine until the block breaks and a smaller block of deepslate finally appears. The deepslate will float on the ground.

TIP: Normally when you mine deepslate, you get cobbled deepslate as the drop. However, when you mine the deepslate using a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, you will get the deepslate itself as the drop.

4. Pick up the Deepslate

Make sure you pick up the deepslate before it disappears.

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 20

Once you pick up the deepslate, it will appear in your hotbar.

Deepslate - Wiki Guide 21

Deepslate is a useful item and should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
