Farmland Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft farmland with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, farmland is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to use a hoe to prepare the soil and turn it into farmland. Farmland can then be used to plant wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroots and other plants.

How to get Farmland in Creative or Survival Mode

You can make farmland in Creative mode or Survival mode by preparing soil with a hoe. So, let’s get started!

1. Find Land with Water

First, you need to find an area of land that has water.

2. Hold a Hoe

Next, you need to select a hoe in the hotbar so that you are holding it in your hand. These are the hoes you can choose from:

Farmland - Wiki Guide 14 How to make a Golden Hoe
Farmland - Wiki Guide 15 How to make a Iron Hoe
Farmland - Wiki Guide 16 How to make a Stone Hoe
Farmland - Wiki Guide 17 How to make a Wooden Hoe
Farmland - Wiki Guide 18 How to make a Netherite Hoe

In this example, we are going to use a wooden hoe.

3. Use the Hoe

Next, you need to hoe the land next to the water. The game control to hoe the land depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), right click on the block.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap on the block.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press the LT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press the L2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press the ZL button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press the ZL button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, right click on the block.
  • For Education Edition, right click on the block.

This will prepare the ground and expose the soil for planting.

TIP: Once you have used the hoe on the blocks that you want to farm, they will look brown (because the grass has been removed). The blocks will begin to get wet from the water and change to a darker brown.
