This Minecraft tutorial explains the Fire Protection enchantment with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

Background

The Fire Protection enchantment reduces the damage caused by fire and lava.

You can add the Fire Protection enchantment to any piece of armor such as helmets, chestplates, leggings or boots using an enchanting table, anvil, or game command. Then you will need to wear the enchanted armor to gain the fire protection.

Wear the Enchanted Armor

Once you have armor enchanted with Fire Protection, you need to wear the enchanted armor. You will not gain the fire protection until the armor items are worn.

Fire Protection Enchantments - Wiki Guide 35

Move each of the armor items (helmet, chestplate, leggings, boots) with Fire Protection from your inventory to your character’s armor boxes.

You will see your character’s appearance change as the armor is worn.

Fire Protection Enchantments - Wiki Guide 36
