Mycelium Wiki Guide

This Minecraft tutorial explains how to craft mycelium with screenshots and step-by-step instructions.

In Minecraft, mycelium is an item that you can not make with a crafting table or furnace. Instead, you need to find and gather this item in the game. Gathering mycelium is a bit tricky in Minecraft because first you need to find it in a Mushroom Island biome and then you need to mine it with a tool that is enchanted with Silk Touch.

Mycelium - Wiki Guide 1

Let’s explore how to add mycelium to your inventory.

Where to find Mycelium in Creative Mode

Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac)

Here is where you can find mycelium in the Creative Inventory menu:

Platform Version(s) Creative Menu Location
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.8 – 1.19
Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.19.3
  • Platform is the platform that applies.
  • Version(s) is the Minecraft version numbers where the item can be found in the menu location listed (we have tested and confirmed this version number).
  • Creative Menu Location is the location of the item in the Creative Inventory menu.

How to get Mycelium in Survival Mode

You can add mycelium to your inventory in Survival mode by mining a block of mycelium with a tool that has been enchanted with Silk Touch. So let’s get started!

1. Find a Block of Mycelium

First, you need to find a block of mycelium in your Minecraft world. Mycelium is usually found in the Mushroom Island biome.

This is what a block of mycelium looks like:

Mycelium - Wiki Guide 7

Mycelium looks a lot like purple dirt and is very easy to spot.

2. Hold a Tool with Silk Touch

To mine the mycelium, you will need to use a tool that has been enchanted with Silk Touch such as pickaxe, shovel, or axe:

In this example, we are going to use an iron pickaxe that is enchanted with Silk Touch.

3. Mine the Block of Mycelium

The game control to mine the mycelium depends on the version of Minecraft:

  • For Java Edition (PC/Mac), left click and hold on the block of mycelium.
  • For Pocket Edition (PE), you tap and hold on the block of mycelium.
  • For Xbox 360 and Xbox One, press and hold the RT button on the Xbox controller.
  • For PS3 and PS4, press and hold the R2 button on the PS controller.
  • For Wii U, press and hold the ZR button on the gamepad.
  • For Nintendo Switch, press and hold the ZR button on the controller.
  • For Windows 10 Edition, left click and hold on the block of mycelium.
  • For Education Edition, left click and hold on the block of mycelium.

Mycelium - Wiki Guide 26

The mycelium block will break and a smaller block of mycelium will float on the ground.

TIP: Normally when you mine the block of mycelium, you get dirt. However, when you mine the mycelium using a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, you will get the block of mycelium itself as the drop.

4. Pick up the Mycelium

Make sure you pick up the mycelium before it disappears.

Mycelium - Wiki Guide 27

Once you pick up the mycelium, it will appear in your hotbar.

Mycelium - Wiki Guide 28

Mycelium is a rare and difficult item to find. It should be kept in your inventory to be used later.
